About this seed

Why gardeners choose this variety

Edible purslane has a place in several regional food traditions, where its fleshy leaves and stems provide a texture different from thin salad greens. Portulaca oleracea is a succulent herb, and its low growth makes the relationship between leaves, stems and soil easy to observe. It is distinct from ornamental moss rose selections.

Grow it as a clearly identified vegetable crop and use tender harvested parts in appropriate fresh or cooked dishes. The succulent texture can give contrast to other greens, while a garden planting allows close control over identification and cleanliness. Manage unwanted self-sowing so it remains where intended. Do not substitute lookalike weeds gathered without identification, and do not assume every plant called Portulaca has the same culinary role.

I planted these purslane seeds in my backyard. Most seeds sprouted nicely. The plants are tough and drought-resistant, easy to take care of. I’ve harvested several batches, and the leaves taste great in salads. Only knocked one star off because germination was a bit spotty; not every seed came up. Overall good seeds, would consider ordering again.
