Description
Lettuce is a fast-growing, cool-season leafy green available in many shapes, sizes, and colors. It is suitable for containers and gardens.
Product features
• Fast-growing leafy green, often ready to harvest in 30–45 days
• Many types: leaf, romaine, butterhead, crisphead, and oakleaf
• Available in green, red, and speckled varieties
• Cool-season crop, best in spring and fall; bolts in summer heat
• Can be harvested as baby greens (cut-and-come-again) or full heads
• Suitable for containers, raised beds, and interplanting
• Shade tolerant compared to many vegetables
Sowing: Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow ⅛–¼ inch deep. Space seeds 1 inch apart; thin leaf lettuce to 4–6 inches apart, head lettuce to 8–12 inches. Rows 12–18 inches apart. Full sun to partial shade (afternoon shade in warmer regions).
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.0). Germination temperature 60–70°F (15–21°C). Germination is poor above 75°F (24°C).
Germination Time: 4–10 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist (not soggy) throughout growth. Lettuce is shallow-rooted and requires regular water for tender leaves.
Additional Tips: Succession plant every 1–2 weeks for continuous harvest. For cut-and-come-again, harvest outer leaves or cut 1 inch above soil. Use shade cloth in warmer weather to delay bolting. Choose bolt-resistant varieties for late spring planting.
