Description
Spinach is a cool-season leafy green vegetable with tender, nutrient-rich leaves. It is best grown in spring and fall.
Product features
• Fast-growing leafy green, often ready to harvest in 30–45 days
• Prefers cool weather; sweetest leaves are produced in spring and fall
• Rich, dark green leaves with a mild, slightly sweet flavor when young
• Suitable for containers, raised beds, and in-ground gardens
• Can be harvested as baby leaves or allowed to mature for larger leaves
• Cold tolerant; many varieties can survive light frost
• Bolts (goes to seed) quickly in hot weather or long daylight
Sowing: Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow ½ inch deep. Space seeds 2 inches apart; thin to 4–6 inches apart. Rows 12–18 inches apart. Full sun to partial shade (afternoon shade in warmer regions).
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile loam rich in organic matter (pH 6.5–7.5). Germination temperature 50–70°F (10–21°C). Germination is poor above 75°F (24°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist throughout growth. Consistent moisture is important for tender leaves and to prevent bolting.
Additional Tips: Succession plant every 2 weeks for continuous harvest. Harvest outer leaves first to allow inner leaves to grow. Use shade cloth in warmer weather to extend the season. Choose bolt-resistant varieties for late spring planting.
