Description
Tall fescue is a cool-season grass with deep roots and good drought tolerance. It is used for lawns, pastures, and erosion control.
Product features
• Deep root system (often 2–3 feet deep) provides excellent drought tolerance
• Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including clay and slightly compacted soils
• Performs well in both sun and partial shade
• Low maintenance, requiring less water and fertilizer than many lawn grasses
• Wear tolerant and recovers well from foot traffic
• Suitable for lawns, sports fields, slopes, and erosion control
• Heat tolerant compared to other cool-season grasses
Sowing: Sow in early spring or early fall (fall is preferred). Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Broadcast at 6–10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new lawns. Full sun to partial shade.
Soil & Temperature: Adaptable to many soils, including clay and loam (pH 5.5–7.5). Germination temperature 60–75°F (15–24°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil moist during germination. Once established, water deeply but infrequently (1–1.5 inches every 5–10 days). Deep watering encourages deep rooting.
Additional Tips: Tall fescue is a bunch grass with limited spread. Use improved turf-type varieties (not coarse pasture types) for lawns. Mow at 3–4 inches in summer to protect roots. Overseed thin areas annually in fall.
