Description

Carrot is a cool-season root vegetable with orange, purple, or yellow roots. It grows best in loose, sandy soil.

Product features

• Crunchy, sweet roots available in many colors (orange, purple, yellow, white, red)
• Cool-season crop, best grown in spring and fall
• Tender and flavorful when harvested young; can be stored in-ground in mild climates
• Suitable for containers with sufficient depth (at least 12 inches)
• Many shapes available: round, short, long, and tapered
• Leaves are ferny and edible (carrot tops)
• Slow to bolt (go to seed) in warm weather with proper varieties

Sowing: Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in late summer for fall harvest. Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Space seeds 1–2 inches apart; thin to 3 inches apart. Rows 12–18 inches apart. Full sun to partial shade.
Soil & Temperature: Requires loose, stone-free, sandy loam (pH 6.0–7.0). Heavy or rocky soil causes forked roots. Germination temperature 55–75°F (13–24°C).
Germination Time: 10–20 days (slower in cold soil).
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (may take 2–3 weeks). Once established, water deeply but infrequently (about 1 inch per week). Consistent moisture prevents cracking.
Additional Tips: Cover seeds with fine vermiculite or compost to prevent crusting. Thin carefully to avoid disturbing remaining roots. Mulch to keep soil cool and moist. Harvest when roots reach desired size (typically ½–1 inch diameter at shoulder).
