Sweet William catchfly is commonly associated with Silene armeria, a pink-family ornamental whose clustered flowers can resemble those of sweet William. The catchfly name refers to sticky parts of the stems, a feature that has attracted attention from gardeners as well as botanists. It is not the same plant as Dianthus barbatus.
A managed seasonal planting can use the clusters as small color accents among finer foliage or simpler flowers. Keep enough space to see the branching rather than treating it as an anonymous filler.
