Description
Rough bluegrass is a cool-season grass species used in shady, moist lawn areas. It forms a dense, fine-textured turf.
Product features
• Tolerates moderate to heavy shade better than many cool-season grasses
• Prefers consistently moist soil, making it suitable for low, damp areas
• Fine, soft texture with a bright green color
• Often used in seed mixtures for shady lawns
• Useful for overseeding thin areas in northern lawns
• Spreads slowly by stolons (above-ground runners)
• Establishes quickly from seed under cool, moist conditions
Sowing: Sow in early spring or early fall (best in late summer/early fall). Sow ¼ inch deep. Broadcast at 2–4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new lawns. Partial shade to shade.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers moist, well-draining to slightly damp soil (pH 5.5–7.0). Does not tolerate drought or heavy heat. Germination temperature 60–75°F (15–24°C).
Germination Time: 14–21 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist (not soggy) during germination and establishment. Water lightly multiple times per day if necessary. Rough bluegrass requires more frequent watering than many other grasses.
Additional Tips: Not recommended for sunny or dry areas. Best used in mixtures with other shade-tolerant grasses like fine fescues. Avoid heavy foot traffic on pure stands.
