Description
Red fescue is a fine-leaved, cool-season grass that tolerates shade and poor soil. It is often used in shade lawns and erosion control.
Product features
• Fine, narrow leaf blades with a soft, dense texture
• Excellent shade tolerance, performing well where many other grasses fail
• Low maintenance, requiring less fertilizer and mowing than many lawn grasses
• Tolerates poor, acidic, and sandy soils
• Spreads slowly by rhizomes (creeping red fescue) or is bunch-type (chewings fescue)
• Useful for shady lawns, slopes, erosion control, and no-mow mixes
• Drought tolerant once established
Sowing: Sow in early spring or early fall (fall preferred). Sow ⅛–¼ inch deep. Broadcast at 4–6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new lawns. Partial shade to shade; tolerates full sun in cooler climates.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, moderately fertile to poor soil (pH 5.5–7.0). Germination temperature 60–70°F (15–21°C).
Germination Time: 14–21 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination. Once established, water moderately; red fescue is more drought tolerant than many shade grasses.
Additional Tips: Red fescue is often mixed with other grasses for lawns. For a no-mow lawn, plant chewings fescue and mow 2–3 times per year. Overseed thin areas in fall. Avoid heavy nitrogen fertilizer.
