Description
Oregano is a perennial herb with small, aromatic leaves used in many cuisines. It spreads slowly and thrives in well-drained soil.
Product features
• Small, oval, dark green leaves with warm, aromatic, slightly bitter flavor
• Perennial (USDA zones 5–10), returning year after year
• Spreads slowly by creeping stems to form a low mat (6–12 inches tall)
• Produces small white or pink flowers in summer, attractive to bees
• Drought tolerant once established; thrives in poor, well-drained soil
• Suitable for containers, herb gardens, rock gardens, and ground cover
• Leaves are best harvested just before flowering for strongest flavor
Sowing: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after frost. Surface sow (needs light); press into soil but do not cover. Space plants 12–18 inches apart. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, sandy or gritty soil (pH 6.0–8.0). Thrives in poor to moderately fertile soil. Germination temperature 65–70°F (18–21°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil lightly moist during germination. Once established, water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Oregano is very drought tolerant.
Additional Tips: Oregano grows slowly from seed; be patient. Do not over-fertilize (leaves will be less flavorful). Pinch back growing tips to encourage bushiness. Cut back to ground in late fall or early spring. Divide plants every 3–4 years to maintain vigor.
