Description

Lampranthus spectabilis, commonly known as trailing ice plant, is a succulent perennial subshrub native to South Africa. It features creeping, spreading branches that form dense mats up to 18 inches tall and 3–4 feet wide. The plant produces masses of large, daisy-like flowers in brilliant shades of pink, purple, red, orange, yellow, and white.

Product features

• Masses of large, showy daisy flowers (1.5–2 inches wide) in brilliant mixed colors
• Creeping, mat-forming growth reaches 12–18 inches tall and spreads 3–4 feet wide
• Blooms profusely from late spring through summer (June–September)
• Succulent leaves and stems for exceptional drought tolerance
• Thrives in warm, dry, sunny locations; not frost tolerant
• Suitable for ground cover, slopes, rock gardens, containers, and hanging baskets

Planting Season: Sow in spring after last frost. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost in cooler regions.

Light Requirement: Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily).

Plant Height: 12–18 inches (30–45 cm). Spread: 3–4 feet (90–120 cm).

Seed Prep: No special preparation required. Seeds are very fine.

Water Needs: Very low. Keep soil lightly misted during germination. Once established, water very sparingly. Highly drought tolerant. Overwatering causes root rot.

Planting Depth: Surface sow or cover very lightly (no more than 1/16 inch / 0.15 cm). Seeds need light.

Sowing Method: Start indoors in seed trays or direct sow in warm climates.

Plant Spacing: 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart.

Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 9–11 (perennial); grown as annual in cooler zones.

Additional Tips: Protect from frost. In cooler climates, grow in containers and overwinter indoors. Prune lightly after flowering.
