Description

Lavender cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is an annual wildflower featuring frilly, double or semi-double flowers in a soft lavender to pale purple shade. Plants have narrow, gray-green leaves on upright, branching stems. Reaches 1–2 feet tall. Blooms from late spring to early fall. The delicate lavender flowers add a soothing, romantic atmosphere to gardens and are excellent for cutting.

Planting Season: Sow directly outdoors in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in fall in mild climates for spring blooms. For earlier blooms, start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost.

Light Requirement: Full sun. Cornflowers perform best with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Seed Prep: No special preparation required. Lavender cornflower seeds germinate readily without stratification, scarification, or soaking.

Water Needs: Moderate. Keep soil evenly moist during germination. Once established, water moderately; plants tolerate brief dry periods but prefer consistent moisture for optimal blooming. Avoid overwatering.

Planting Depth: ¼–½ inch. Cover seeds lightly with fine soil or compost.

Sowing Method: Direct sow is recommended. Scatter seeds thinly over prepared soil, cover lightly, and mist gently. For indoor starting, sow seeds in cell trays filled with seed-starting mix and transplant after the last frost.

Plant Spacing: Space plants 6–12 inches apart. For row planting, space rows 12–18 inches apart. Thinning is recommended for larger blooms.

Hardiness Zones: Annual in all zones (USDA zones 2–11).

Additional Tips: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming throughout the season. In rich soil, plants may become floppy; pinching back stems in early summer promotes bushier growth. For dried flower arrangements, harvest when flowers are fully open and hang upside down in a dry, dark place. Self-seeding can be controlled by removing spent flower heads before seeds mature. The lavender variety pairs beautifully with white, pink, or deep purple cornflowers in mixed borders.
