Description

Kumquat is a small citrus tree that produces tiny, oval fruits with sweet skin and tart flesh. It can be grown in containers.

Product features

• Small, oval citrus fruits (1–2 inches long) eaten whole – sweet skin, tart flesh
• Small tree or large shrub, reaching 6–15 feet in ground, smaller in containers
• Hardy for a citrus, tolerating temperatures down to 15–20°F (-9 to -6°C)
• Evergreen with glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers
• Fruit ripens in winter, often remaining on the tree for months
• Suitable for container growing (keeps tree smaller) and indoor overwintering
• Cold-tolerant variety: Nagami is most common; Meiwa is sweeter

Sowing: Sow in spring. Extract seeds from fresh fruit; clean off pulp. Sow ¼–½ inch deep in well-draining potting mix. Plant one seed per small pot. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5). Use citrus or cactus mix for containers. Germination temperature 70–80°F (21–27°C).
Germination Time: 14–28 days (can be longer).
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged during germination and growth. Allow top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Additional Tips: Trees grown from seed may take 5–10 years to produce fruit (grafted trees fruit sooner). Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun. In cool climates, grow in container and move indoors before frost. Fertilize with citrus fertilizer in spring and summer.
