Description
Gymnocalycium is a genus of small, globular cacti often called chin cacti. They produce colorful flowers and are suitable for indoor growing.
Product features
• Small, globular shape with ribs and typically no spines (or very short spines)
• Produces large, showy flowers in pink, white, yellow, or red, often at the top
• Very slow growing, remaining small and suitable for indoor spaces
• Easier to grow from seed than many other cacti
• Suitable for small pots, cactus gardens, and windowsills
• Available in many species, including colorful grafted varieties (e.g., red or orange tops)
• Tolerates indoor conditions with bright light
Sowing: Sow in spring or summer. Use sterile, well-draining cactus mix with sand or perlite. Surface sow (seeds are small); do not cover. Cover container with clear plastic to maintain humidity. Bright indirect light.
Soil & Temperature: Requires gritty, fast-draining soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Germination temperature 70–80°F (21–27°C). Bottom heat improves germination.
Germination Time: 14–28 days.
Watering: Keep soil lightly moist (not wet) during germination. Mist with a fine spray. After germination, gradually reduce humidity by opening the cover. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings.
Additional Tips: Remove cover gradually to prevent seedling shock. Provide very good air circulation after germination. Do not expose young seedlings to direct hot sun. Transplant when seedlings are about ½ inch in diameter (usually after one year).
