Description
Green bean is a warm-season legume grown for its tender pods. Bush and pole varieties are available.
Product features
• Tender, crisp pods with mild, sweet flavor when young
• Two growth habits: bush beans (compact, 12–24 inches tall) and pole beans (vining, 6–10 feet)
• Fast growing, often ready to harvest 50–60 days from sowing (bush beans)
• Bush beans produce over a concentrated period; pole beans produce continuously
• Nitrogen-fixing (with rhizobium bacteria), improving soil for following crops
• Suitable for gardens and containers (bush types)
• Pod colors include green, yellow (wax), and purple
Sowing: Direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 60°F (15°C). Sow 1 inch deep. Bush beans: space 2–4 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches apart. Pole beans: space 4–6 inches apart at base of trellis. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, moderately fertile loam (pH 6.0–7.0). Avoid high nitrogen. Germination temperature 70–80°F (21–27°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during germination and pod development. Water at base; avoid wetting leaves to reduce disease. Consistent moisture is important for tender pods.
Additional Tips: Inoculate seeds with rhizobium bacteria for better nitrogen fixation. Do not plant where peas or beans grew last year (rotate). Harvest bush beans every 2–3 days when pods are young and before seeds bulge. Pole beans require sturdy trellis or support.
