Description

Buffalo grass is a warm-season, low-growing grass native to North America. It is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance.

Product features

• Native to North American prairies, well-adapted to dry climates
• Extremely drought tolerant; can survive on natural rainfall in many regions
• Low-growing (4–8 inches unmowed), requiring less frequent mowing
• Low maintenance with low fertilizer and water needs
• Spreads by stolons to form a sod over time
• Turns golden brown and dormant during winter, greening up in spring
• Suitable for naturalized lawns, slopes, and low-use areas

Sowing: Sow in late spring after soil warms to at least 60°F (15°C). Seeds require pre-treatment (stratification) for best results; refrigerate for 4–6 weeks before planting. Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Broadcast at 3–5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, clay or loam soil (pH 6.0–8.0). Germination temperature 70–85°F (21–29°C).
Germination Time: 14–21 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during germination (up to 4 weeks). Once established, water deeply only during extended drought. Established buffalo grass may survive on 1–2 waterings per month in hot climates.
Additional Tips: Buffalo grass does not tolerate shade, heavy foot traffic, or competition from weeds. Do not over-fertilize (avoid high nitrogen). Mow at 3–4 inches or leave unmowed for a meadow look.
