Description
Zucchini is a warm-season summer squash that produces abundant, tender fruits. It is fast growing and productive.
Product features
• Tender, mild-flavored summer squash with thin, edible skin
• Very productive; one or two plants can yield abundant fruits
• Fast growing, often ready 45–55 days from sowing
• Bush habit (not vining), suitable for gardens and large containers
• Fruits best when harvested small (6–8 inches); large fruits become seedy and less tender
• Golden varieties available (yellow zucchini)
• Male flowers appear first; female flowers produce fruit
Sowing: Direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C), or start indoors 2–4 weeks before transplanting (use biodegradable pots). Sow ½–1 inch deep. Space plants 24–36 inches apart (bush types). Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile loam rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.5). Germination temperature 70–85°F (21–29°C).
Germination Time: 5–10 days.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) throughout growth. Water at base in morning. Inconsistent watering may cause blossom end rot or misshapen fruits.
Additional Tips: Harvest fruits every 1–2 days when small; overgrown fruits slow production. Remove large fruits to encourage more. Male flowers are edible; stuff or fry as a dish. Watch for squash bugs and powdery mildew (provide good air circulation). Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
