Description

Watermelon is a warm-season vine fruit with sweet, juicy flesh. It requires warm weather and space to spread.

Product features

• Sweet, juicy flesh (red, pink, yellow, or orange) with high water content
• Vigorous trailing vines that spread 6–10 feet or more
• Warm-season crop, requiring long, hot growing season (70–90+ days)
• Many sizes available: personal (3–5 lbs), icebox (6–12 lbs), and standard (15–30+ lbs)
• Seedless varieties available (require pollinator plants)
• Suitable for gardens with ample space; can be trellised with fruit support
• Rind may be solid green, striped, or mottled

Sowing: Direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 70°F (21°C), or start indoors 2–4 weeks before transplanting (use biodegradable pots). Sow ½–1 inch deep. Space plants 24–36 inches apart; rows 5–6 feet apart. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, sandy loam rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–6.8). Germination temperature 75–90°F (24–32°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist until fruits begin to ripen. Reduce watering as fruits approach maturity to concentrate sweetness. Water at base; avoid wetting leaves.
Additional Tips: Use black plastic mulch to warm soil in cooler regions. Fruit ripens when tendril nearest fruit turns brown, ground spot turns from white to creamy yellow, and thumping produces a dull sound. Protect ripening fruits from soil contact with straw or cardboard.
