Description

Venus flytrap is a carnivorous perennial native to wetlands. It has leaves that snap shut when triggered by small insects.

Product features

• Unique, fascinating leaf structure that snaps shut when small hairs are triggered twice
• Carnivorous plant that obtains nutrients from captured insects (does not require feeding)
• Small rosette shape with 4–8 traps per mature plant
• Produces small white flowers on tall stalks (often removed to conserve energy)
• Slow growing from seed, requiring patience (several years to mature)
• Suitable for terrariums, bog gardens, and indoor growing with proper conditions
• Native only to a small region in the Carolinas (USA)

Sowing: Sow in spring. Use a shallow container with drainage. Growing medium: 1 part sphagnum peat moss to 1 part perlite or coarse sand (no fertilizer). Surface sow on moist medium; do not cover. Cover container with clear plastic to maintain humidity. Bright indirect light (no direct hot sun).
Soil & Temperature: Requires nutrient-poor, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5). Use only distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water – tap water kills the plant. Germination temperature 75–85°F (24–29°C).
Germination Time: 14–28 days (can be longer).
Watering: Keep soil constantly moist but not waterlogged. Place container in a tray with ¼ inch of distilled water to maintain humidity. Never let soil dry out.
Additional Tips: Do not fertilize. Do not trigger traps intentionally; each trap can only close several times before dying. After germination, gradually reduce humidity. Plants require a winter dormancy (cold rest) after 2–3 years. Grow in a terrarium or indoors with bright light.
