Bird cherries belong to the Prunus group, which also includes familiar orchard fruits and many ornamental flowering trees. Purple-leaved selections add a second design interest beyond blossom: foliage that can contrast with the green canopy around it. However, the common name Purpleleaf Bird Cherry is used in horticulture without always making the species or cultivar clear.
