Description
Plantain is a low-growing perennial herb with broad leaves. It is commonly found in lawns and disturbed areas and is known for its adaptability.
Product features
• Extremely hardy and adaptable, growing in a wide range of conditions
• Tolerates foot traffic, compacted soil, and mowing
• Useful as a low-maintenance ground cover in difficult areas
• Perennial, returning year after year without replanting
• Leaves grow in a rosette pattern close to the ground
• Produces tall, narrow seed spikes in summer
• Thrives where many other plants struggle
Sowing: Direct sow in spring or fall. Surface sow or barely cover (⅛ inch deep). Space plants 6–12 inches apart. Full sun to partial shade.
Soil & Temperature: Tolerates almost any soil, including clay, compacted, and low-fertility soils. Prefers pH 5.5–7.0. Germination temperature 60–70°F (15–21°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil moist during germination. Once established, plantain is very drought tolerant and requires little supplemental water.
Additional Tips: Plantain spreads by seeds. Remove seed spikes before they mature if you want to control spread. It persists in lawns; consider leaving it as a beneficial ground cover rather than treating as a weed.
