Description

Pea is a cool-season legume grown for its sweet, round seeds. It prefers cool weather and can be grown on trellises.

Product features

• Sweet, round seeds (or flat snow/snap pods) eaten fresh or cooked
• Cool-season crop, best in early spring or fall; stops producing in summer heat
• Many types: shelling peas (seeds only), snow peas (flat pods), snap peas (plump edible pods)
• Vining habit (2–6 feet) requiring trellis support; some dwarf or bush varieties available
• Nitrogen-fixing (with rhizobium bacteria), improving soil
• Fast growing, often ready 55–70 days from sowing
• Sweetest when harvested fresh; sugars rapidly turn to starch after picking

Sowing: Direct sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked (4–6 weeks before last frost). For fall crop, sow 8–10 weeks before first frost. Sow 1 inch deep. Space seeds 2 inches apart; thin to 4 inches. Bush peas: rows 12–18 inches apart. Vining peas: rows 24–36 inches apart. Full sun to partial shade.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile loam (pH 6.0–7.0). Germination temperature 55–70°F (13–21°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod development. Peas prefer consistent moisture.
Additional Tips: Provide trellis for vining varieties (branches, twine, or netting). Mulch to keep soil cool. Pick peas frequently to encourage continued production. Do not plant where beans or peas grew last year. Inoculate seeds with rhizobium bacteria for nitrogen fixation.
