May chang is commonly associated with Litsea cubeba, an aromatic member of the laurel family from Asia. Its fruit has been used as a source of fragrant oil, linking the plant with perfumery and useful-plant collections. Despite overlapping names in trade, it is not the same plant as cubeb pepper in Piper.
Raise it as an identified woody aromatic plant and observe its leaves and branching before planning a permanent site. Its cultural interest is the connection between a living tree and a fragrant material, not an invitation to distill concentrated oils at home.
