Japanese blueberry tree is an ornamental tree with an intriguing name: it is not a blueberry bush of the familiar fruit-growing kind. Elaeocarpus decipiens comes from East Asian forest landscapes, and the name Elaeocarpus refers to an olive-like fruit. Gardeners have adopted it mainly for its foliage, including the contrast between bronze young leaves and darker mature growth.
In a suitable climate it can form a substantial evergreen screen or a leafy specimen tree. Plan its position around that eventual scale, leaving room for the crown and allowing for falling leaves and ornamental fruit.
