Golden larch offers an unusual combination: the soft needles and cone-bearing habit of a conifer, followed by a seasonal change to gold and then leaf fall. Pseudolarix amabilis comes from China and is distinct from the true larches in Larix. Its common name describes a resemblance, rather than placing it in the same genus.

For a conifer collection, it provides a clear example that evergreen is not a requirement for being a conifer. Place an established plant where its autumn transformation and bare winter framework can be seen.
