Description
Cucumber is a warm-season vine vegetable that produces crisp, green fruits. It can be grown on trellises or along the ground.
Product features
• Crisp, refreshing fruits with mild flavor, high water content
• Fast-growing vines that begin producing 50–70 days from sowing
• Two main types: slicing (for fresh eating) and pickling (smaller, bumpy fruits)
• Trellising saves space, improves air circulation, and produces straighter fruits
• High yielding when grown in warm, sunny conditions
• Male and female flowers; some varieties are gynoecious (mostly female) for higher yield
• Harvest young for best texture and to encourage continued production
Sowing: Direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C), or start indoors 2–3 weeks before transplanting (use biodegradable pots). Sow ½–1 inch deep. Space plants 12 inches apart (vining) or 24 inches (bush); rows 3–4 feet apart. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile loam rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.0). Germination temperature 70–85°F (21–29°C).
Germination Time: 5–10 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist (not soggy) throughout growing season. Inconsistent watering leads to bitter, misshapen fruits. Water at base in morning to reduce leaf wetness.
Additional Tips: Trellis vining types for better air circulation and straighter fruits. Harvest every 1–2 days to keep plants producing. Bitter fruits may indicate stress (heat, drought, or low fertility). Avoid planting near potatoes.
