Description
Cantaloupe is a warm-season melon with netted rind and sweet orange flesh. It requires plenty of space and warm weather.
Product features
• Sweet, juicy orange flesh with musky, floral aroma when ripe
• Netted tan rind that separates from the flesh easily (full-slip varieties)
• Vigorous trailing vines that can spread 4–6 feet or more
• Warm-season crop requiring long, hot growing season
• Fruits typically weigh 2–5 pounds depending on variety
• Suitable for gardens with ample space or trellised with fruit support
• Rich in flavor when fully ripe on the vine
Sowing: Direct sow after last frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C), or start indoors 2–4 weeks before transplanting. Sow ½–1 inch deep. Space plants 18–24 inches apart; rows 4–5 feet apart. Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, sandy loam rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.0). Germination temperature 75–85°F (24–29°C).
Germination Time: 7–14 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist until fruits begin to ripen. Reduce watering as fruits approach maturity to concentrate sweetness. Water at base; avoid wetting leaves.
Additional Tips: Use black plastic mulch to warm soil in cooler regions. Fruit ripens when stem slips easily from fruit with gentle pressure (full-slip varieties). Protect ripening fruits from soil contact with straw, cardboard, or melon cradle.
