Description

Cabbage is a cool-season leafy vegetable that forms a dense head of leaves. It is grown for fresh use or cooking.

Product features

• Dense, round heads of smooth or crinkled leaves in green, red, or purple
• Cool-season crop, best grown in spring and fall
• Excellent storage life; many varieties can be stored for months in cool conditions
• Suitable for fresh eating (slaws, salads), cooking (soups, stir-fries), and fermenting (sauerkraut, kimchi)
• Heads weigh 1–5 pounds depending on variety
• Nutritious leafy vegetable
• Available in early, mid, and late-season varieties

Sowing: Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost for spring crop, or direct sow in mid-summer for fall crop. Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Space plants 12–18 inches apart (closer for smaller heads). Rows 24–36 inches apart. Full sun.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter (pH 6.5–7.0). Germination temperature 65–75°F (18–24°C).
Germination Time: 7–12 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist throughout growth. Cabbage requires regular, even watering for proper head development. Stress can cause splitting or poor head formation.
Additional Tips: Mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Protect from cabbage worms with row covers or Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Harvest when heads feel firm and solid. After harvest, the stump may produce smaller secondary heads.
