Description
Broccoli is a cool-season vegetable that produces large, edible green heads. It also produces side shoots after the main head is harvested.
Product features
• Large, dense green heads (florets) on thick, edible stems
• Cool-season crop, best in spring and fall; tolerates light frost
• After main head is harvested, plants produce smaller side shoots for extended harvest
• Nutritious vegetable
• Many varieties available including purple sprouting broccoli
• Suitable for gardens and containers (large containers for single plants)
• Fast growing, ready 50–70 days from transplant
Sowing: Start indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost for spring crop, or direct sow in mid-summer for fall crop. Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Space plants 18 inches apart. Rows 24–36 inches apart. Full sun.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–7.0). Germination temperature 65–75°F (18–24°C).
Germination Time: 7–12 days.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist throughout growth. Inconsistent watering may cause loose heads (buttoning).
Additional Tips: Mulch to keep soil cool and retain moisture. Harvest main head when tight and dark green, before yellow flowers appear. After cutting, side shoots will develop over several weeks. In warm weather, broccoli may bolt (flower prematurely). Provide afternoon shade in warmer regions.
