Description
Beefsteak tomato produces large, meaty fruits with classic tomato flavor. It is an indeterminate variety that benefits from staking.
Product features
• Large, meaty fruits, often 8–12 ounces or more, with classic tomato flavor
• Indeterminate growth, producing fruit continuously until frost
• Slicing tomato, ideal for sandwiches, burgers, and fresh eating
• Meaty texture with relatively few seeds and seed cavities
• Requires staking or caging due to heavy fruit and tall vines (can reach 6–8 feet)
• Open-pollinated and heirloom varieties available
• Fruits typically mature 75–85 days after transplanting
Sowing: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost. Sow ¼ inch deep. Transplant seedlings after frost risk passes and soil has warmed. Space plants 24–36 inches apart. Full sun (8+ hours).
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, fertile loam rich in organic matter (pH 6.2–6.8). Germination temperature 70–80°F (21–27°C).
Germination Time: 5–10 days.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) throughout growth. Inconsistent watering can lead to blossom end rot and cracked fruits. Water at the base; avoid wetting leaves.
Additional Tips: Bury stems deeply when transplanting to encourage root growth. Provide strong support (stakes, cages, or trellis). Remove lower leaves to improve air circulation. Pinch suckers for larger fruits or leave for higher yield.
