Product features
• Deep taproot (often 10–15 feet deep) that breaks up compacted soil and accesses subsoil moisture
• Fixes atmospheric nitrogen in root nodules, enriching soil for following crops
• Highly productive as animal forage or green manure crop
• Perennial, persisting for 3–5 years or more under good conditions
• Produces clusters of small purple or blue flowers that attract bees
• Excellent for improving soil organic matter and structure
• Drought tolerant due to deep roots
Sowing: Sow in spring (after frost) or late summer (8 weeks before first frost). Sow ¼–½ inch deep. Space rows 6–12 inches apart for field sowing, or broadcast at 10–20 lbs per acre (¼–½ lb per 1,000 sq ft for garden use). Full sun required.
Soil & Temperature: Prefers well-draining, neutral to slightly alkaline soil (pH 6.5–7.5). Does not tolerate acidic or waterlogged soil. Germination temperature 65–75°F (18–24°C).
Germination Time: 7–10 days.
Watering: Keep soil moist during germination. Once established, alfalfa is drought tolerant but produces best with moderate, deep watering every 1–2 weeks.
Additional Tips: Inoculate seeds with rhizobium bacteria specific to alfalfa before planting for effective nitrogen fixation. Cut or mow before flowering if using as green manure. Do not graze or mow too short (leave 3–4 inches).
